Val d'Isère: the pearl of the Alps
A visionary station
This small alpine village, located in the Tarentaise valley, came into being long before the advent of winter tourism.
The creation of the Val d'Isère resort in 1931 stemmed from the meeting of two men, Jacques Mouflier and Nicolas Bazile. The development of this high-mountain village began in 1932 with the creation of public infrastructure, followed by the urban development plan in 1936. Then, in 1937, the very first ski school opened, staffed by young locals from Val d'Isère as instructors. Since then, the resort has continued to grow, becoming one of the most popular ski resorts in Europe.
A land of champions
To attract tourists, the Val d'Isère resort created a Sports Club to organize competitions. Today, the Face de Bellevarde remains a World Cup stage on the Oreiller-Killy piste. Thanks to the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games, the resort hosted four men's events: giant slalom, super-G, combined, and downhill.
For decades, Val d'Isère has been the playground and training ground for many world-renowned athletes. Henri Oreiller, Paule Moris, Jean-Claude Killy and the Goitschel sisters, among others, were among the great names in skiing who took their first ski runs in Val d'Isère.
